Southern University

Jerry Burkett II returned to Southern University as a graduate assistant after a successful playing career as a left-handed pitcher for the Jaguars.

A Hattiesburg, Mississippi native, Burkett prepped at Hattiesburg High School, where he was a member of the 2018 Mississippi 5A State Championship team. He earned an associate degree in General Studies from Pearl River Community College in 2020 before completing a Bachelor of Science in Criminal Justice at Southern University in Fall 2023.

Burkett was a member of Southern’s 2021 SWAC Championship team and was recognized as the 2021–22 Male Student-Athlete of the Year at Southern University, as well as the 2021–22 Student-Athlete of the Year by Athlete for Hope.

His professional experience includes time with the Mahoning Valley Scrappers. Burkett has also served as an assistant coach at Liberty Magnet High School (2024–25) and is currently the head coach for the Louisiana Bucs 16U program.
