Southern Falls to Alabama in Straight Sets

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. — The Southern University volleyball team fell to Alabama, 3-0 (25-16, 25-11, 25-11), Saturday afternoon at Foster Auditorium.
 
Southern (2-9) battled throughout the opening set, but Alabama (8-1) used a strong offensive performance to take the first frame, 25-16. The Lady Jaguars finished the set with 11 kills while hitting .156.
 
Mariah Mott and Sereniti Johnson led Southern offensively in the opening set with three kills apiece, while Penina Vito recorded 10 assists. Paulina Agudelo Marin added two kills on three attacks.
 
Alabama continued to control the match in the second set, taking a 25-11 decision. The Crimson Tide hit .429 in the frame while Southern was held without a positive hitting percentage. Mott recorded two kills in the set, while Alayah Wilson added two kills on three attacks.
 
The Lady Jaguars showed signs of a late push in the third set, but Alabama closed out the match with a 25-11 victory. Southern recorded five kills in the frame, with Sereniti Johnson leading the way with two. Vito added two assists and a service ace.
 
Mott paced Southern with five kills and 23 attacks, while Johnson also finished with five kills. Vito distributed 14 assists, and Najah Harris recorded 11 digs from the libero position. Wilson added three kills while hitting .600, and Agudelo Marin finished with three kills and a .143 hitting percentage.
 
As a team, Southern recorded 21 kills and 19 assists while Alabama finished with 40 kills and 33 assists. The Crimson Tide hit .459 for the match compared to Southern's -.013.
 
Harris also contributed 11 digs, while Reagan Robinson collected five digs and Mott added four. Southern finished with two team blocks.

Southern will have the home opener at 11 a.m. on September 22 against Texas A&M – Corpus Cristi.
