Team Effort Lifts Lady Jaguars Over SUNO

Box Score NEW ORLEANS — The Southern University volleyball team had 11 players with multiple kills to lead the Lady Jaguars to victory Tuesday night, defeating Southern University at New Orleans, 3-1, at The Castle.
 
The Lady Jaguars improved to 2-6 on the season with the 25-20, 23-25, 25-18, 25-20 victory, while SUNO dropped to 4-5.
 
Sereniti Johnson led Southern with 13 kills on 28 attacks while hitting .357. Mariah Mott added eight kills, while Nyla Hoult and Norielle Battle finished with five kills apiece. Seven over Lady Jaguars finished with multiple kills on the night. Maleah Faust directed the Southern offense with 23 assists, while Penina Vito added 16.
 
Najah Harris led the Lady Jaguars on defense with 33 digs, which were a season-high. Logan Hart finished with seven blocks, while Mott had six.
 
Southern opened the match with a strong first set, overcoming an early 3-2 deficit with an 8-2 run to take a 10-5 lead. The Lady Jaguars maintained control throughout the remainder of the set and closed out the frame, 25-20, taking a 1-0 lead.
 
SUNO answered in the second set. Southern led 14-12 before the Knights rallied to take a 17-14 advantage. The Lady Jaguars battled back to tie the set at 17-17, but SUNO scored eight of the final 14 points to even the match at one set apiece with a 25-23 win.
 
Southern regained control in the third set, building an 18-15 advantage before closing the frame on a 7-3 run. Johnson, Mott and Agudelo Marin helped pace the Lady Jaguars offensively as Southern took the third set, 25-18, and moved within one set of the victory.
 
The fourth set featured several momentum swings. Southern jumped out to an 8-2 lead before SUNO rallied to take a 15-12 advantage. The Lady Jaguars responded with four consecutive points to even the set at 16-16 before pulling away late. Southern scored nine of the final 13 points to secure the 25-20 victory and close out the match.
 
Johnson finished the night with a team-high 13 kills, while Mott recorded eight. Robinson added three kills, two assists, two aces and one dig, while Reese contributed three kills.
 
The Lady Jaguars' defense helped limit SUNO to 36 kills and a .032 hitting percentage. SUNO was led offensively by Taszia Adkinson and Samaria Berry, who each finished with nine kills. Adkinson also recorded 13 assists.
 
UP NEXT
Southern travels to Tuscaloosa, Alabama, for the Crimson Classic. The Lady Jaguars will take on Jacksonville State at noon and Nicholls at 3:30 p.m. on Friday. Southern will take on Alabama on Saturday at 11 a.m. on SECNetwork+.
