BATON ROUGE, La. — Southern University scored three unanswered goals, including two from Jamila Omardin, to rally past Spring Hill College 3-1 Sunday afternoon at A.W. Mumford Stadium.
The victory gave the Lady Jaguars their first win of the season and improved Southern to 1-2. Spring Hill fell to 0-2. Southern finished with an 11-9 advantage in shots and put six attempts on goal in front of 318 fans.
Spring Hill struck first in the 28th minute. Madison Hitzman scored at 27:20 off an assist from Sofia Jimenez Garcia to give the Badgers a 1-0 advantage. Southern responded less than nine minutes later when Keilyn Pittman scored an unassisted goal at 35:54, her first of the season, to even the match.
The Lady Jaguars weren't finished before halftime. Omardin put Southern ahead for good at 40:41, finishing a chance set up by Pittman to give the Jaguars a 2-1 lead heading into the break. Southern generated eight first-half shots and put five on target while limiting Spring Hill to three shots.
Omardinstruck again early in the second half. Dasia Howard provided the assist on Omardin's goal at 54:44, extending Southern's advantage to 3-1.
Southern was forced to finish the match with 10 players after Shania Walters received a red card for unsporting behavior in the 73rd minute. Spring Hill generated several opportunities afterward, but the Lady Jaguars' defense held firm. Sidney Wooldridge, who replaced starting goalkeeper Sydney Whitten in the 61st minute, made two saves over the final 29:43 to preserve the two-goal advantage.
Whitten earned the victory after allowing one goal and making two saves in 60:17. Southern's goalkeepers combined for four saves, while Spring Hill goalkeeper Ava Bell made three. The Lady Jaguars finished with six shots on goal compared with five for the Badgers.
Omardin led Southern with two goals on two shots, while Pittman finished with a goal and an assist. Howard added an assist as Southern turned a one-goal deficit into its first victory of the season.
