Southern Rallies Past UAPB 11-7, Creates Three-way Tie For Fourth Place in SWAC

BATON ROUGE, La. — Southern erupted for nine runs over the middle innings and pulled away for an 11-7 victory over Arkansas-Pine Bluff on Friday night, tightening the Southwestern Athletic Conference race and forcing a three-way tie for fourth place.

After falling behind early, Southern answered with a four-run third inning and broke the game open with a five-run sixth, highlighted by a bases-clearing double from Xavier Bradley. The Jaguars finished with 13 hits and capitalized on timely hitting to secure the series-opening win at Lee-Hines Stadium. 

Arkansas-Pine Bluff jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first and later cut into the deficit late, but could not overcome Southern's offensive surge. 

KEYS TO THE GAME

  • Middle-inning explosion: Southern flipped the game with four runs in the third and added five more in the sixth to turn a one-run game into a comfortable lead. 
  • Clutch extra-base hit: Xavier Bradley three-run double in the sixth inning broke the game open and capped the decisive rally. 
  • Limiting damage late: Despite allowing three runs in the ninth, Southern's pitching staff built enough cushion to withstand UAPB's final push.
