GRAMBLING, La. — Southern University dropped a hard-fought Southwestern Athletic Conference contest, falling 2-1 to Grambling on Saturday morning at the GSU Softball Complex.

Southern (29-13, 15-6 SWAC) outhit Grambling (14-25, 5-15) 6-3 but couldn't capitalize on key opportunities, leaving seven runners on base in the one-run loss.

Grambling struck first in the fourth inning, using a bases-loaded situation to manufacture a run on a fielder's choice. Southern answered in the fifth when
Asia George delivered an RBI single to plate
Keira Miracle-Tilford and tie the game at 1-1.

The Tigers responded immediately in the bottom half of the inning, reclaiming a 2-1 lead after a run scored on a groundout following a leadoff walk.

Southern threatened late but couldn't break through. In the seventh, the Jaguars put two runners on base, but a groundout ended the rally and secured the win for Grambling.

At the plate, George led the way with a hit and the team's lone RBI.
Kira Manganello added a double, while
Ariel Burton,
Laila Clark,
Calli Schell, and
Ava Wallace each recorded hits.

Chakirrious Parker turned in a solid outing despite taking the loss, allowing just three hits and two runs over six innings while striking out one.
