BATON ROUGE, La. — The Southern University softball team reached 30 wins for just the third time in program history with a 3–1 victory over Prairie View A&M in the opener of a Southwestern Athletic Conference series at Lady Jaguar Field.
Southern improved to 30-13 overall and 16-6 in conference play behind a complete-game performance from
Aaliyah Zabala. The right-hander allowed only one unearned run on seven hits while striking out five to earn her 15th win of the season. The Lady Jaguars previously reached the 30-win mark in 1999 and 2005.
Prairie View (25-15, 7-2 SWAC) capitalized on a pair of Southern errors in the opening inning to score an unearned run and take an early lead. The Lady Jaguars quickly regained control in the third.
Asia George drew a walk and stole second before
Katiana Maldonado singled to put runners on the corners.
Laila Clark delivered the decisive hit, driving a double off the wall down the left-field line to bring home two runs and give Southern a 2–1 advantage.
Southern added an insurance run in the fourth in unconventional fashion.
Kira Manganello was hit by a pitch for the 13th time this season, and pinch runner
Keira Miracle-Tilford advanced to third on a wild pitch and a single by
Jaicee Massey. Miracle-Tilford scored on a steal attempt by Massey to extend the lead to 3–1.
Clark paced the offense, going 2-for-3 with two RBIs. Maldonado and George each scored a run, while Massey and
Ariel Burton added hits as Southern finished with seven on the day.
Zabala handled the rest, working out of multiple jams and stranding eight Prairie View runners. She capped the outing by retiring the side in order in the seventh to secure the win.
