Softball Heads to Grambling for Final Road Series

BATON ROUGE, La. — Southern University will hit the road for the final time this season as the Lady Jaguars travel to face Grambling State in a three-game series beginning April 17 at the GSU Softball Complex.

Southern (27-12, 13-5 SWAC) enters the weekend riding momentum after a series sweep over Arkansas-Pine Bluff. The Lady Jaguars secured run-rule victories of 9-1 and 10-2 in games one and three, and rallied from a deficit in game two to complete the sweep with a 5-3 win.
 
Laila Clark earned her third SWAC Newcomer of the Week honor after leading the offensive surge with a standout season at the plate. The sophomore transfer hit .625 in the series, recording two home runs, a double, four RBIs, and three runs scored. She currently ranks among the SWAC leaders, sitting second in batting average (.444), home runs (9), slugging percentage (.824) and total bases (89). Clark also ranks third in RBIs (44) and 10th in stolen bases (16), while striking out just six times this season.
 
Ava Wallace, Katiana Maldonado, Jaicee Massey and Kira Manganello also delivered strong performances, each batting .500 or better during the series. Wallace went 4-for-7 with two doubles and two RBIs, while Maldonado finished 4-for-8 with three runs scored. Massey and Manganello each went 2-for-4, with Manganello adding two home runs.
 
In the circle, Southern's pitching staff controlled the series, led by Aaliyah Zabala and Chakirrious Parker.
 
Zabala earned two wins on the weekend, including a complete-game two-hitter in the opener. She also provided 3.0 innings of shutout relief in game two. The sophomore continues to rank among the conference's best, leading the SWAC in wins (13) and shutouts (4), while ranking second in ERA (2.01), strikeout-to-walk ratio (3.38) and WHIP (1.14).
 
Parker added a strong outing in the series finale, tossing 4.2 innings while allowing just three hits to earn her sixth win of the season.
