BATON ROUGE, La. – Southern University's
Laila Clark has been named the Southwestern Athletic Conference Co-Newcomer of the Week after powering the Lady Jaguars to a three-game sweep of Arkansas–Pine Bluff, the league announced Wednesday.
Clark paced Southern with a .625 batting average in the series, the fourth-best mark in the conference for the week. She totaled five hits, including two home runs and a double, drove in four runs, and scored three times. Her two homers, 1.500 slugging percentage, and 12 total bases all ranked as the top marks in the SWAC during the past week.
In the series opener, Clark went 2-for-3 with a home run, a double, two RBIs, and two runs scored in the Lady Jaguars' run-rule victory.
Although she did not record a hit in game two, Clark still made a decisive impact. With the score tied in the bottom of the fifth inning and runners on second and third, she lifted a sacrifice fly to right field that brought home the eventual game-winning run.
Clark regained her rhythm in the series finale, delivering a perfect 3-for-3 performance. She was one of four Lady Jaguars to hit a home run in the game, bringing her season total to nine, thesecond most in the SWAC.
This marks Clark's third Newcomer of the Week honor this season, having previously earned the accolade on February 18 and March 19.
