BATON ROUGE, La. – Southern University standouts Aaliyah Zabala and Abigail Mitchell collected Southwestern Athletic Conference weekly honors after powering the Lady Jaguars to a perfect 5-0 week, the league announced Wednesday. Zabala was named SWAC Pitcher of the Week, while Mitchell earned Co-Hitter of the Week recognition.
 
Zabala delivered dominant performances in the circle during Southern's series against Alcorn. The sophomore opened the weekend with a complete-game, three-hit shutout, keeping Braves hitters off balance throughout while striking out seven. Only one Alcorn runner advanced as far as second base, as Zabala never allowed a serious scoring threat.
 
In the series finale, Zabala entered in relief during the third inning with Southern trailing 7-5 and once again shut the door. She tossed 4.1 innings of scoreless softball, allowing just two baserunners and striking out three to secure the comeback win.
 
Mitchell was equally impressive at the plate, batting .615 across five games. The left-handed hitter tallied a double, triple, three home runs, seven runs scored, nine RBIs and four stolen bases during the week.
 
The sophomore opened with a 3-for-5 performance in the midweek doubleheader against Xavier of Louisiana, launching her first home run of the week. She followed with a triple and another homer in the series opener against Alcorn. On Saturday, Mitchell set the tone early with a three-run blast in the first inning, her third consecutive game with a home run. In the finale, she went a perfect 2-for-2 and delivered a game-tying double in the sixth inning.
 
The honor marks the first weekly award for Zabala and the second for Mitchell.
