GULFPORT, Miss. — Southern University pounded out 17 hits but came up short in an 11-inning battle, falling 5-4 to Florida A&M University on Tuesday night at the Southwestern Athletic Conference Tournament.

Southern (33-14) grabbed an early lead in the first inning when
Asia George tripled to right-center and scored on an RBI double by
Laila Clark.

Florida A&M (30-19) answered with two runs in the bottom of the frame to take a 2-1 advantage.
The Lady Jaguars tied the game in the second after
Prestaisha White singled home
Ava Wallace. Southern moved back in front in the third when Wallace drove in Keira MiracleTilford with a single to right field to make it 3-2.

Florida A&M evened the score in the fifth on a sacrifice fly, and neither team pushed across a run through the next five innings as both pitchers settled into a rhythm.

Southern reclaimed the lead in the top of the 11th.
Abigail Mitchell singled and later scored on a throwing error following a base hit by
Ariel Burton to put the Lady Jaguars ahead 4-3.

Florida A&M answered in the bottom half. After reaching on an error, Neriah Lee delivered an RBI triple to tie the game before Amya Ramos followed with the game-winning single to left.

Wallace led Southern at the plate, going 4 for 6 with an RBI. White added three hits and an RBI, while George, Clark, Mitchell and Burton recorded two hits apiece.

Aaliyah Zabala took the loss after pitching 10 1/3 innings with nine strikeouts, allowing five runs, four earned, on 13 hits.

The Lady Jaguars will take on Bethune-Cookman in an elimination game on Thursday at 1 p.m.
