BATON ROUGE, La. — Southern University turned in a strong all-around performance Tuesday at Lady Jaguar Field, sweeping Xavier of Louisiana in a doubleheader. The Lady Jaguars claimed a 2-1 victory in the opener before pulling away for a 6-2 win in game two.
Â
Game 1: Southern 2, Xavier 1
Southern (19-11) leaned on timely hitting and dominant relief pitching to outlast Xavier (5-20) in a tightly contested first game.
Â
The Lady Jaguars struck early in the bottom of the first when
Asia George was hit by a pitch, stole second, and later scored on an RBI single from
Prestaisha White to make it 1-0.
Â
Xavier answered in the third to even the score, but Southern quickly regained control. With two outs,
Abigail Mitchell singled and came around to score on an RBI double by
Izabell Astran, giving the Lady Jaguars a 2-1 lead they would not relinquish.
Â
The Gold Nuggets threatened in the fourth, loading the bases with one out, but
Jordynn Jennings entered in relief and delivered under pressure. She induced a fly out before
Laila Clark cut down a runner at the plate to end the inning. Jennings took it from there, tossing three hitless innings to lock down the win.
Â
Southern finished with four hits, with
Ava Wallace adding the team's other base knock.
Hayley Hinds made the start, allowing one run on two hits over 3.1 innings.
Â
Game 2: Southern 6, Xavier 2
Southern carried that momentum into the nightcap, using a fast start and a decisive third inning to complete the sweep.
Â
George wasted no time, launching a solo home run on the second pitch of the first inning to give the Lady Jaguars an early spark.
Â
After Xavier tied the game in the third, Southern responded with a four-run outburst.
Keira Miracle-Tilford drove in a run with a sacrifice fly before Mitchell delivered the biggest blow—a two-run home run to break the game open. Wallace followed with an RBI single to extend the lead to 5-1.
Â
Wallace stayed hot in the fifth, adding an RBI triple to cap a three-hit, two-RBI performance. Mitchell finished with two hits and two RBIs, while George also turned in a multi-hit game.
Â
Jennings once again came up big in relief, escaping a late threat with an inning-ending double play before closing the door with a quick, five-pitch seventh to earn her second save of the season.
Â
Chakirrious Parker earned the win, allowing two runs (one earned) over 5.1 innings.
Â
Southern totaled nine hits in the nightcap while holding Xavier to five, sealing the doubleheader sweep.
Â
UP NEXT
Southern will end the first half of SWAC play with Alcorn at Lady Jaguar Field starting on Match 27. First pitch is set for 5 p.m. on Friday with a doubleheader starting at noon on Saturday.
