Zabala Dominant in Shutout Win Over Alcorn

BATON ROUGE, La. — Behind a commanding performance in the circle from Aaliyah Zabala and a timely offensive surge, Southern University cruised to a 7–0 victory over Alcorn State on Thursday evening at Lady Jaguar Field.

Southern (20-11, 6-4 SWAC) broke open a scoreless game in the fourth inning and never looked back, while Alcorn (11-19, 0-8 SWAC) struggled to find any rhythm at the plate against Zabala.

Zabala was in complete control from the outset, firing a three-hit shutout with seven strikeouts and no walks. The sophomore retired 10 of the final 11 batters she faced, sealing her ninth win of the season in dominant fashion.

After three quiet innings, the Jaguars broke through in the fourth. Asia George ignited the rally with a single, and Laila Clark followed with a base hit to put runners in scoring position. A wild pitch plated the game's first run before Abigail Mitchell delivered the decisive blow, a two-run homer to left, to give Southern a 3–0 lead.

Southern kept the pressure on in the fifth. Prestaisha White led off with a single, and George doubled to once again set the table. Clark came through with a two-RBI single to extend the lead to 5–0. Mitchell continued her big night with an RBI triple, and an Alcorn error later in the inning pushed the margin to 7–0.

Mitchell paced the Jaguars offensively, going 2-for-3 with a home run, a triple, and three RBIs. Clark added two hits and two RBIs, while George scored twice and doubled in a strong all-around performance at the top of the lineup.

Alcorn State managed just three hits and advanced a runner into scoring position only once, as Southern's pitching and defense combined for a dominant shutout effort.
