Southern Welcomes Arkansas-Pine Bluff for Homecoming Showdown on The Bluff

BATON ROUGE, LA — Few Saturdays on The Bluff are quite like Homecoming. Southern University will look to give its alumni and fans another reason to celebrate when the Jaguars host Arkansas-Pine Bluff on Saturday at A.W. Mumford Stadium in a Southwestern Athletic Conference match-up.

Kickoff is set for 6 p.m., and the game will air on SWAC TV. Southern's 2026 Homecoming theme, "Nobody Does It Better," will be on full display as generations of Jaguars return to Baton Rouge for one of the biggest weekends on the university calendar. After a week of Homecoming activities, Saturday night gives Southern a chance to cap the celebration with a victory in front of its home crowd.

For the Jaguars, the match-up also offers a chance to bounce back. Southern returns home following a 35-17 loss at Jackson State last week. Before that setback, the Jaguars gave their fans plenty to cheer about at Mumford Stadium, putting 50 points on the board in a 50-31 victory over Louisiana Christian.

Now Southern gets another chance to establish itself at home. Saturday will mark coach Marshall Faulk's first Southern Homecoming game, adding another chapter to his first season leading the Jaguars. The Hall of Fame running back will experience one of HBCU football's signature traditions from the home sideline as Southern looks to deliver in front of a packed Homecoming crowd.

The setting could provide the Jaguars with an added boost. From the tailgating outside the stadium to the Human Jukebox and Dancing Dolls inside it, Homecoming at Southern brings an atmosphere unlike a typical Saturday. The Jaguars will try to turn that energy into an early advantage and keep the crowd involved throughout the night.

Arkansas-Pine Bluff enters at 2-2 overall and 0-1 in SWAC play after an open week. The Golden Lions have displayed offensive firepower, scoring at least 35 points in three games, including 51 in a two-point loss to Alcorn State.

That makes Southern's ability to control the game especially important. The Jaguars can help themselves by sustaining drives, protecting the football and keeping UAPB's offense on the sideline. Southern has already shown what its offense can accomplish at Mumford Stadium, and another productive night would put pressure on the Golden Lions to keep pace in a difficult road environment.

Defensively, Southern will be challenged to prevent the explosive plays that have helped UAPB generate points. Forcing the Golden Lions into long drives and creating third-down opportunities could allow the Jaguars to feed off the Homecoming crowd.

Southern also has history and familiarity on its side. The Jaguars have won the last five meetings with Arkansas-Pine Bluff, including a 31-9 victory over the Golden Lions in 2025. Southern has not lost to UAPB since 2019 and will look to continue that run Saturday.

But Homecoming games carry their own expectations. For Southern, this is more than another date on the schedule. Alumni travel from across the country to return to The Bluff, families gather for traditions passed through generations, and A. W. Mumford Stadium becomes the center of the Southern University community for one night.

The Jaguars have the chance to keep the celebration going after the final whistle. Southern will have the crowd. It will have the familiar surroundings. And it will have an opportunity to respond to last week's loss with an important performance in SWAC play. On a weekend built around the message "Nobody Does It Better," the Jaguars will get their chance to prove it on their home field.
