Southern Falls to Alcorn

LORMAN, Miss. — The Southern University volleyball team dropped a 3-0 decision to Alcorn on Wednesday evening at the Davey L. Whitney Health and Physical Education Complex, falling 25-19, 25-17 and 25-23 in Southwestern Athletic Conference action.
 
The Lady Jaguars battled throughout the opening set, using early service pressure from Penina Vito to build a 5-0 advantage. Southern continued to trade points with the Lady Braves before Alcorn rallied to take control late in the set. The hosts closed out the frame, 25-19, to take a 1-0 lead.
 
Southern struggled to find its offensive rhythm in the second set as Alcorn built an early advantage. The Lady Jaguars attempted to respond behind Norielle Battle and Mariah Mott, but the Lady Braves maintained their momentum and pulled away for a 25-17 victory to move within one set of the match.
 
Facing a sweep, Southern delivered its strongest offensive performance of the evening in the third set. The Lady Jaguars found their rhythm offensively and remained within striking distance throughout a tightly contested frame. Southern used a pair of service aces from Maleah Faust to help generate momentum and continued to exchange points with Alcorn down the stretch.
 
The Lady Jaguars pulled even at 23-23 late in the set, but Alcorn secured the final two points to close out the match with a 25-23 win.
 
Paulina Agudelo Marin led Southern with six kills while Battle added five. Alayah Wilson contributed three kills and a service ace, while Vito paced the offense with 13 assists and two service aces.
 
Defensively, libero Najah Harris recorded a team-high 11 digs, while Reagan Robinson an Vito added six digs.
 
UP NEXT
Southern will have it's final homestand of the season starting on Friday. The Lady Jaguars will take host Texas Southern at 6 p.m. in the H.W. Moody Intramural Sports Complex.
