Southern Dominates Texas Southern On Saturday Afternoon

BATON ROUGE, La. — Zaria Hurston scored 11 points to lead all scorers as Southern University rolled past Texas Southern 64-45 on Saturday afternoon, pulling away early and never letting the Lady Tigers threaten in Southwestern Athletic Conference play.

Southern used a balanced offensive effort and steady defensive pressure to build a double-digit lead by halftime, then opened the third quarter with an extended run to turn the game into a rout. The Jaguars led by as many as 22 points in the second half.

Hurston set the tone with her activity in the paint, pairing her team-high scoring total with key rebounds as Southern controlled the tempo. The Jaguars placed multiple players in the scoring column and leaned on their depth to maintain energy throughout the afternoon.

Texas Southern struggled to find consistent offense, shooting below 35 percent from the field and committing costly turnovers that led to easy transition opportunities for Southern.

Southern's defense limited clean looks, particularly from the perimeter, and the Jaguars capitalized by converting turnovers into points while winning the battle on the boards. Mykayla Cunningham and DeMya Porter combined for seven of the Jaguars' fifteen takeaways on the day.

Keys to Victory

  • Defensive pressure: Southern forced turnovers and turned defense into offense.

  • Balanced scoring: The Jaguars had 10 of the 11 players who entered the contest score points.

  • Rebounding edge: The Jaguars controlled the glass, limiting second-chance opportunities.

  • Second-half surge: Southern put the game away with a strong third quarter.

By the Numbers

  • 11 — Points scored by Zaria Hurston, leading all players

  • 64 — Points scored by Southern, its highest output in conference play this season

  • 45 — Points allowed, marking another strong defensive showing

  • 20+ — Largest lead for Southern in the second half

  • 10 — Southern players who scored

Southern returns to action later this week as SWAC play continues, while Texas Southern looks to regroup in its next conference matchup

Keys to Victory

1. Offensive Balance

Southern spread the scoring with contributions up and down the roster — 10 players scored, and the bench added 26 points, keeping pressure on TSU throughout.

2. Rebounding Edge

The Jaguars won the rebounding battle 41-38, carving out extra possessions and limiting second-chance opportunities.

3. Take Care of the Ball

Southern limited critical turnovers and converted Texas Southern miscues into 20 points off turnovers, helping sustain long runs.

4. Defensive Control

The Jaguars held Texas Southern to 33.3% shooting overall and 14.3% from deep, making it tough for TSU to maintain momentum.
