Football Falls In Season Opener To North Carolina Central

ATLANTA, Ga. – A tale of two halves, where the Jaguars electrifying start in the first half, but came out dry in the second half, dropping their season opener  31–14 to North Carolina Central on Saturday night at Center Parc Stadium in front of 16,191 fans.

The game started explosively, with both teams trading long touchdown runs in the first quarter, capped by an 80-yard TD run by sophomore running back Trey Holly with 3:19 left in the first half. Southern showcased explosive talent in Holly (116 yards, 1 TD) and Cam'Ron McCoy (108 rushing yards, 69-yard TD run), but offensive drives stalled after halftime.

Defensively, Southern's Horacio Johnson tallied 11 tackles, while Vincent Paige Jr. added nine tackles and a tackle for a two-yard loss. 

  • The Jaguars' offensive  line held their own in their first appearance in the 2025 season

  • The Jaguars quarterback rushed for over 100 yards

  • Holly and Mike Franklin showed that they earned the nickname "Thunder & Lightning" with a balanced rushing attack, showing power and slashing runs

INSIDE THE NUMBERS

  • Southern picked up 15 first downs, while North Carolina Central finished with 21

  • Southern finished the night with 91 passing yards to NCCU's 183 passing yards

  • SU finished the night with 268 rushing yards to the NCCU 231

  • Southern finished with only 91 receiving yards, while North Carolina Central finished with 183

  • The Jaguars finished with 37 yards in penalties, while the Eagles finished with 50

UP NEXT
Southern will be back in action on August 30th as they take on the Delta Devils of Mississippi Valley State University in Itta Bena, MS. The Game is slated for a 4:00 PM kickoff.
