SU Cruises to Win Over UAPB in Season Finale

JACKSON, Miss. | The Southern University softball team closed at the regular season with a 13-4 victory against Arkansas-Pine Bluff on Saturday afternoon.

Aaliyah Zabala (4-7) started in the circle and picked up the win for Southern. The freshman went five innings, giving up four runs on six hits, allowing one walk and striking out six. 

Offensively, the Jaguars were led by Keira Miracle-Tilford, who went 3-for-5 on the day with two runs, one double and two RBI's. Ariel Burton compiled a noteworthy performance as well, going 2-for-4 with two RBI's and a home run. Makyia Taylor also contributed for Southern, putting together one hit, one home run, in four trips to the plate while adding two RBI's.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Southern (22-22, 13-11 SWAC) got on the scoreboard first, starting in the third inning.
  • The Jaguars got a two run RBI double from junior Andie Suhai scoring Miracle-Tilford and Ariel Burton from second base, which brought the Jaguars lead to 2-0, Alissa Castaneda RBI single scored another run, Katiana Maldonado pushed another run across the board on an RBI single and Alana Mark RBI double to right center scoring pushed the Jaguars lead to 5-0 
  • The Lions fought back, closing the gap to 5-2 until Southern added another run off Makyia Taylor home run in the fourth
  • UAPB added two runs in the bottom of the fifth to close in on SU lead 6-4
  • The Jaguars pushed three runs across in the top of the sixth on a Miracle-Tilford single bringing Calli Schell home and a two-run home run off the bat of Burton bringing in Miracle-Tilford and increasing the SU advantage 9-4.
  • SU held UAPB scoreless 
  • Southern added some insurance in the seventh extending their lead to 13-4 and coasted to the win.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
  • The Jaguars power output was led by Miracle-Tilford, who picked up three hits in the ballgame.
  • Southern's highest scoring inning was the third, when it pushed five runs across.
  • SU had control of the rest of the game after moving ahead of the Lions 6-2 in the top of the fourth.
  • Five Jaguars had multiple hits in the ballgame.
  • Southern out-hit the Lions at an 15-7 clip.
  • Aylani Ottley stole two bases and Schell stole one base in Saturday's game.
