Lady Jaguars Fall 5-3 in SWAC First Round

GULFPORT, Miss. | Southern opened the 2025 SWAC Softball Tournament with a strong performance but ultimately fell 5-3 to Jackson State on Tuesday afternoon at the Gulfport Sportsplex.

Sophomore Miranda Roldan (8-6) started for Southern (22-23). The right-hander allowed two hits and one walk. Freshman Aaliyah Zabala also made an impact in the circle for the Jaguars, throwing 5.0 innings, giving up zero runs, no walks, four hits and four strikeouts.

Offensively, the Jaguars were paced by Senior Alana Mark, who went 2-for-3 with an RBI and sophomore Makyia Taylor, who went 2-for-3 with an RBI.

HOW IT HAPPENED
The Jaguars were trailing 5-0 in the third inning when they first put run on the board. Katiana Maldonado came across to score the lone run of the inning for Southern off Makyia Taylor single to center.

Southern added a run in the fifth when Alana Mark singled to third base that scored Aylani Ottley, cutting into the Tigers advantaged 5-2.

The Jaguars scored another run in the sixth off Ariel Burton fouled out to right field and Keira Miracle-Tilford scored on a throwing error.

GAME NOTES
·      Mark and Taylor compiled two base hits in the game for Southern.
·      Zabala struck out four Tigers hitters and threw five scoreless innings.
·      The Jaguars had 9 hits.
·      Southern pitchers faced 29 Jackson State hitters in the game, allowing five ground balls and eight fly balls while striking out four.
·      JSU had five Tigers with multiple hits in the game.
·      Morris led the Tigers pitching staff, throwing 7.0 innings giving up three-runs, two earned, nine hits, one walk and striking out one.
