Southern's Historic Tournament Run Comes To An End In The First Round Of The 2025 Women's NCAA Tournament

LOS ANGELES, CA -- Southern University women's basketball team historic season comes to an end this past Friday night in the first round of the 2025 NCAA Division 1 Women's Basketball Tournament. The Jaguars laced up against the overall number one team in the country (UCLA), being the very first team in program history to play in the first round. Final score from Pauley Pavilion was 84-46.

HOW IT HAPPENED

- Jaguars went 19-of-60 shooting from the field (31.7 percent) and 2-of-15 from 3PT (13.3 percent).
- SU was led by Aniya Gourdine (5-13 FG, 0-3 3PT) finished with ten points. Taniya Lawson (3-6 FG, 2-3 FT) added eight points, while D'Shantae Edwards (1-5 FG, 3-4 FT) and Jocelyn Tate (3-11 FG) chipped in six points each. 
- Ten Jaguars played scored in the contest with only one finishing the night with double digits.
- UCLA shot 26-of-47 from the field (55.3 percent) and 9-of-20 from 3PT (45.0 percent). 
- Southern pulled down 23 rebounds, including 14 on the defensive side of the glass.
- The Lady Bruins registered 44 rebounds, with 35 coming on the defensive end. 
- The Jaguars also went 6-for-11 from the free-throw line. 
- The Lady Bruins sank 23-of-30 from the charity stripe.
- Southern University finished the night with seven steals and seven assists.
- University of California Los Angeles came away with seven steals and twenty-three assists.

Head coach Carlos Funchess said farewell to nine young ladies that has paved the way for the generations to come. Sky CastroAleighyah FontenotAniya GourdineTionna LidgeSoniyah Reed and DaKiyah Sanders. These six young ladies will add to Coach Funchess amazing list of Graduates from The Southern University.
