The Jags Are Dancing Again After Knocking Off Alcorn State In The 2025 Starry SWAC Women's Basketball Championship Game

ATLANTA, GA --#1 Southern takes out #6 Alcorn State in the 2025 Starry SWAC Women's Basketball Championship game, that started out to be a heavy weight bout but the Jags picked uop the defensive intensity ans outscored the Braves 16-4 in the second quarter and never looked back. Final from the Gateway Center Arena at College Park was 64-44.

HOW IT HAPPENED
- The Jags and Braves battled it out in the first ten minutes of the contest scoring 20 points each, 20-20.
- The Jaguars picked up the defensive intensity in the second quarter outscoring the Braves 16-4 to take a twelve-point lead in the half, 36-24.
- The Jaguars pick up right where they left off in the first half outscoring ASU 15-12 to extend their lead to fifteen points to close out the third quarter, 51-36. 
- The Jags reached for their dancing as they only allowed the Braves to score eight points in the fourth quarter to go ahead and secure the Jaguars third title         
   in six years under the leadership of head coach Carlos Funchess.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS
- Jaguars went 21-of-54 shooting from the field (38.9 percent) and 6-of-19 from 3PT (31.6 percent).
- SU was led by Soniyah Reed (3-8 FG, 1-4 3PT, 4-4 FT), DaKiyah Sanders (4-6 FG, 3-4 3PT) and Tionna Lidge (3-4 FG, 5-6 FT) all finished with eleven points each.
   Aniya Gourdine (3-12 Fg 3-3 FT) finished the night with nine points, four points, three assists and two steals in twenty-eight minutes of play.
   Freshman Jocelyn Tate (3-7 FG, 2-2 FT) chipped in eight points and six boards for the Jags.  

- Eight out of the nine Jaguars played scored in the contest with three finishing the night with double digits.
- ASU shot 16-of-45 from the field (35.6 percent) and 4-of-18 from 3PT (22.2 percent). 
- Southern pulled down 34 rebounds, including 24 on the defensive side of the glass, led by Lidge with a team-high ten rebounds
- The Lady Braves registered 29 rebounds, with 23 coming on the defensive end. 
- The Jaguars also went 16-for-17 from the free-throw line.
- The Lady Tigers sank 8-of-11 from the charity stripe.
- Southern University finished the night with nine steals and thirteen assists, led by Sanders with a game-high four assists.
- Alcorn State University came away with three steals and eleven assists.

UP NEXT
The Jaguars punched their ticket to the 2025 NCAA D1 Women's Tournament. The 2025 Women's Selection Show will take place on Sunday, March 16th at TJ Ribs at 7 PM. The doors will open at 6 PM.
