Southern Advances To SWAC Tournament Semifinal After Eliminating Mississippi Valley On Wednesday Evening

ATLANTA, GA --Southerns' Soniyah Reed and Aniya Gourdine led the Jags over Mississippi Valley to advance to the 2025 Starry SWAC Women's Basketball Semifianl on Friday. Final from the Gateway Center Arena at College Park was 63-43.


HOW IT HAPPENED
- The Jags opened the game with a 5-0 run over the Lady Delta Devils to outscore them 15-10 in the first quarter, 15-10. 
- The Jags continued their dominance outscoring Mississippi Valley 19-13, to take a eleven-point lead at the first half, 34-23.
- The Jaguars pick up right where they left off in the first half outscoring MVSU 20-12 to extend their lead to nineteen points to close out the third quarter, 54-35. 
- The Jags continued their dominance coasting to a 20-point victory to eliminate Mississippi Valley in the Quarterfinal round of the 2025 Starry SWAC Women's Basketball Tournament.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS
- Jaguars went 21-of-66 shooting from the field (31.8 percent) and 6-of-24 from 3PT (25 percent).
- SU was led by Soniyah Reed (5-17 FG, 2-9 3PT) and Aniya Gourdine (5-10 FG, 2-4 3PT) finished the night with 13 points each. Jocelyn Tate (3-8 FG, 1-1 3PT, 3-7 FT) and DaKiyah Sanders (3-8 FG, 3-4 FT) chipped in ten points each, while Tionna Lidge (1-8 FG, 5-6 FT) added another seven point and ten huge rebounds.
- Eight out of the eleven Jaguars played scored in the contest with four finishing the night with double digits.
- MVSU shot 14-of-42 from the field (33.3 percent) and 5-of-16 from 3PT (31.3 percent). 
- Southern pulled down 44 rebounds, including 23 on the defensive side of the glass, led by Lidge with a team-high ten rebounds
- The Lady Delta Devils registered 38 rebounds, with 30 coming on the defensive end. 
- The Jaguars also went 15-for-23 from the free-throw line.
- The Lady Panthers sank 10-of-18 from the charity stripe.
- Southern University finished the night with fifteen steals and sixteen assists, led by Aleighyah Fontenot and Taniya Lawson with four assists each.
- Mississippi Valley State University came away with seven steals and nine assists.

UP NEXT
The Jaguars advanced to the Semifinal on Friday, March 14th at 5:30 est as they will play the winner out of Jackson State and Grambling State.
