Southern Falls to Texas

AUSTIN, Texas | The Southern University men's basketball team was back in action as the Jaguars fell, 95-69, to Texas on Monday night at Moody Center.

Southern (4–5) shot 51% from the field in the second half, cutting into the deficit after trailing 46–27 at the break. The Jaguars' reserves outscored Texas' bench 37–29, led by 
Malek Abdelgowad, who finished with 17 points on 5-of-7 shooting, including 2-for-2 from beyond the arc and 5-of-6 at the free-throw line. Michael Jacobs scored 11 points and AJ Barnes added 10 for the Jaguars, which also generated 16 points off turnovers and matched Texas in fast-break scoring with 15 points.

Texas (7–3) was led by Matas Vokietaitis, who scored 28 points and went 14-for-14 at the free-throw line, while Jordan Pope added 18. The Longhorns shot 56.9% from the floor and 90.6% from the line.

  • Southern shot 40.0 percent (24-of-59) from the floor, 41.7 percent (5-of-12) from the 3-point line and 64 percent (16-of-25) from the free-throw line
  • The Jaguars grabbed 27 rebounds, with 15 coming on the defensive glass

  • Matas Vokietatis posted 28 points, on 7-of-10 shooting, with six boards and block
  • Jordan Pope added 18 points and two rebounds
  • Simeon Wilcher chipped in 14 points, two boards and two assists
  • Camden Heide and Dailyn Swain recorded 11 and 10 points, respectively
  • Texas finished with 32 points in the paint, 29 bench points, 15 fast break points, 14 points off 14 SU turnovers and 14 second-chance points

Southern returns to action Wednesday night against Texas State. Tip-off is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. inside the Strahan Arena at the University Events Center and streamed on ESPN+.
