Lady Jaguars Battle but Fall to Rattlers in SWAC Championship

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. — Southern University's postseason run came to a hard-fought close on Sunday afternoon, as the Lady Jaguars fell 3–1 to Florida A&M in the SWAC Championship inside the Al Lawson Center.

Southern (16–17, 9–7 SWAC) pushed the Rattlers (14–16, 9–7 SWAC) through long rallies, extended defensive sequences, and multiple momentum swings, but FAMU's balanced attack and timely blocking ultimately proved the difference in a tightly contested match decided by scores of 25–12, 20–25, 25–22, 25–23.

Florida A&M controlled the opening frame, using seven total blocks and 14 kills to halt Southern's offense in a 25–12 decision. The Lady Jaguars countered with an emphatic response in the second set, hitting .216 as a unit behind a dominant effort from Ariana Brown, who delivered eight of her team-high 18 kills in the frame. Brown powered a key 15–12 push that helped even the match with a 25–20 victory. Sereniti Johnson anchored the floor throughout the afternoon, finishing with seven kills, a match-leading 21 digs, two aces and two blocks, including several pivotal plays during Southern's second-set run.

The third set featured 10 ties as Southern battled point-for-point. Zaria Nelson sparked the momentum with three service aces and added four kills and 12 digs to highlight her strong two-way performance. Libero Najah Harris continued her postseason consistency with 18 digs and a perfect 1.000 reception percentage, keeping the Jaguars in system during extended rallies. Despite the push, FAMU closed the frame with a late surge to take a 25–22 advantage.

The fourth set delivered championship-level drama, featuring back-to-back challenges, extended rallies, and neither team leading by more than three. Setter Jordan Felix orchestrated the attack with 29 assists, five kills, 10 digs and four blocks, while Sophie Diouf added five kills and five blocks to give Southern a strong presence at the net. Brown, Johnson and Nelson combined for 13 kills in the final stanza as the Lady Jaguars clawed back to tie the set at 22–22. However, Florida A&M capitalized on late transition opportunities to edge out a 25–23 win and secure the SWAC title.

Southern closed the match with 42 kills, 72 digs and eight team blocks, showcasing resilience and competitive fire in its championship appearance.

For their performances, Brown and Felix were named to the All-Tournament Team.
