BATON ROUGE, La. – Southern University's
Jordan Felix reached a major career milestone on Monday night, surpassing 2,000 career assists as she guided the Lady Jaguars to a 3–1 victory over rival Grambling State (25–17, 25–21, 24–26, 25–18) inside Seymour Gymnasium.
With the win, Southern improved to 13–15 overall and 8–6 in Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) play, clinching a spot in the upcoming SWAC Volleyball Tournament, which begins November 21 in Tallahassee, Florida.
Felix entered the match needing just 23 assists to reach the 2,000 mark and wasted little time getting there, recording nearly half of that total in the opening set. The Lady Jaguars came out sharp from the first serve, combining efficient offense and strong blocking to set the tone early. Southern hit .167 in the first frame while holding Grambling (7–18, 5–9) to just .036, cruising to a 25–17 victory behind Arianna Brown, who notched five early kills to fuel the offense.
In the second set, Southern showed resilience after falling behind 7–2. The Lady Jaguars responded with a 15–3 run, sparked by defensive pressure that forced seven Grambling errors and kills from multiple hitters. Maintaining poise down the stretch, Southern closed out the set 25–21 to take a commanding 2–0 lead.
Grambling refused to go quietly, taking advantage of several Southern miscues to narrowly capture the third set, 26–24. The Lady Jaguars quickly regrouped, however, dominating the fourth set with a .394 hitting percentage and steady defense to put the match away, 25–18. The final frame showcased Southern's composure and consistency — the product of a team that has continued to grow stronger throughout the season.
Senior outside hitter Arianna Brown once again led the charge for the Jaguars, finishing with 23 kills, eight digs, and three blocks while hitting .333 on 48 attempts. Felix orchestrated the attack with precision, totaling 38 assists, 11 digs, and two blocks while spreading the offense efficiently across the front line.
Zaria Nelson contributed nine kills and eight digs, and
Bailee St. Romain added seven kills to bolster the attack. In the backcourt,
Najah Harris anchored the defense with 19 digs and added three service aces, helping Southern control momentum and maintain strong serve-receive play throughout the match.
As a team, Southern hit .203 compared to Grambling's .123, out-blocked the Lady Tigers 8–3, and recorded 64 digs.
