Southern Heads to Prairie View and Texas Southern for Final SWAC Road Swing

11/1/2025 5:49:00 PM

BATON ROUGE, La. – The Southern University volleyball team hits the road for the final time this regular season, traveling to face Prairie View A&M on Sunday, November 2, and Texas Southern on Monday, November 3, in a key Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) road swing.

The Jaguars (11–13, 6–4 SWAC) enter the weekend looking to build late-season momentum and improve their position in the conference standings heading into postseason play. Southern will look to rediscover the balance and defensive energy that fueled its midseason surge while bouncing back from a challenging stretch of matches.

In their previous meeting with Prairie View on September 28, the Jaguars fell 3–0 (25–14, 25–17, 25–13) at home. The Panthers (13–11, 10–1 SWAC) controlled the net throughout, hitting .341 as a team while tallying 11 service aces and eight blocks. Southern finished the match with 25 kills and 38 digs, led by outside hitter Ariana Brown, who posted a team-high 12 kills.

The Jaguars will aim to turn the tables in Sunday's rematch by tightening their serve-receive and attacking more efficiently against one of the conference's top blocking teams.

This season, Southern averages 10.46 kills and 12.7 digs per set, with Brown leading the offensive charge and Najah Harris anchoring the back row with 3.68 digs per set. Prairie View enters the weekend among the SWAC leaders in hitting percentage (.217) and service aces (1.48 per set), powered by standout outside hitter Kaylee Owens, who paces the Panthers with 3.54 kills per set.

Following Sunday's contest, the Jaguars will travel to Houston to take on Texas Southern (7–17, 6–5 SWAC) on Monday evening. Southern dropped the earlier meeting to the Lady Tigers in Baton Rouge, 3–1 (25–16, 25–17, 17–25, 25–13), despite another strong effort from Brown (13 kills) and Harris (17 digs). Texas Southern has been effective defensively, averaging 12.85 digs per set, and will look to defend its home court in the rematch.

With SWAC Tournament positioning on the line, Southern aims to finish the regular season strong and carry momentum into postseason play. First serve at Prairie View is set for 2 p.m. on Sunday, followed by Monday's matchup at 6 p.m. in Houston.
