BATON ROUGE, La. — Southern University returns to Clifford Seymour Gym Friday, Oct. 10, for a 6 p.m. CT showdown with Bethune-Cookman as Southwestern Athletic Conference play continues.
Â
Southern enters the weekend at 6–11 overall and 3–2 in SWAC play, winners of three straight.
Â
The Jaguars' attack is led by junior outside
Ariana Brown, who tops the team's offensive numbers with 206 kills (3.49 kills per set), while graduate
Elise Doomes and junior
Zaria Nelson have also been steady scoring options. At the net and in the middle, Southern's blocking and balanced offense have helped the team get timely runs in league play.
Â
Running the offense has been senior setter
Jordan Felix, who has produced 379 assists (about 6.42 assists per set) this season and frequently converts into the back-row defensive game as well (106 digs on the year). Felix's play earned conference recognition recently — she was named the SWAC Setter of the Week after the Jaguars' recent three-match stretch. Expect Felix to be the engine for Southern's attack against B-CU.
Â
On the other side, Bethune-Cookman brings an offense that scores efficiently and defends with discipline. The Wildcats' team have a solid front line and balanced attack — B-CU has averaged about 11.4 kills per set and 10.6 assists per set on the season, plus 2.2 blocks per set, numbers that keep them in every set. Their individual leaders include Tiyanna Preston (team-high 146 kills) and Nola Hemphill (325 assists), while Sthefany Carvalho leads the Wildcats in digs.
