Prairie View Spoils Southerns' Homecoming

BATON ROUGE, LA – What was supposed to be a day of celebration at A.W. Mumford Stadium turned into another frustrating outing for Southern University football. Prairie View A&M spoiled the Jaguars' Homecoming with a 24–3 victory Saturday evening, controlling the game from start to finish in front of 23,715 fans.

Southern struggled to find rhythm offensively, failing to score a touchdown for the second straight week. Quarterback Ashton Strother completed 12 of 21 passes for 81 yards but was intercepted once. Running back Trey Holly provided one of the few bright spots, rushing for 99 yards on 21 carries. True freshman Amariyon Asberry saw his first action in the backfield for the Jaguars picking three crucial first downs to the keep the sticks moving.

The Jaguars' lone scoring drive came in the third quarter when Nathan Zimmer connected on a 36-yard field goal to cut the deficit to 17–3. But Prairie View quickly regained control late in the fourth quarter when McDowell powered into the end zone from one yard out to seal the win.

Southern's defense, led by Elijah West with eight tackles, played with energy early but wore down as the game progressed. The Jaguars gave up 361 total yards while committing two costly fumbles that led directly to Panthers 24-points.

Keys to the Game

Turnovers Costly for Southern:

Two fumbles and an interception killed promising drives and gave Prairie View short fields. PVAMU converted those turnovers into 14 points.

Prairie View's Efficiency on Offense:

Peters and McDowell led a balanced attack with 361 total yards and 4.4 yards per rush. The Panthers went 4-of-5 in the red zone.

Southern's Passing Struggles:

The Jaguars couldn't establish a consistent aerial game—just 81 yards through the air—and converted only 7 of 16 third downs.

Defensive Fatigue:

Though Elijah West and Herman Brister III kept Southern competitive early, extended drives and turnovers wore down the Jaguar defense late
