Southern Uses Huge Second Quarter To Knock Off Jackson State On Thursday Night

BATON ROUGE, LA --The Jaguars got off to a slow start but uses a huge second quarter to dominate Jackson State on Thursday night by double digits to win their sixth straight game. Final score from F.G. Clark Activity Center was 64-47.

HOW IT HAPPENED

- The Lady Tigers got off to a fast start outscoring the Jaguars 16-9 at the end of the first quarter, 16-9.  
- The Jags opened up the ball game by outscoring the Lady Tigers 21-9 to take a five-point lead at the first half, 30-25.
- The Jaguars outscored the Lady Tigers 15-10 in the third quarter to extend their lead to ten-points to close out the third quarter, 45-35. 
- The Jaguars outscored the Lady Tigers for the third straight quarter to close out the game dominating the JSU by seventeen-points to pick up their sixth straight game.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS

- Jaguars went 23-of-59 shooting from the field (30.0 percent) and 6-of-19 from 3PT (31.6 percent).
- SU was led by Aniya Gourdine (8-16 FG, 1-4 FT) finished the night with 18 points, seven rebounds and five assists. Aleighyah Fontenot (5-10 FG, 3-7 3PT, 6-6 FT) led all scorers with 19 points and six rebounds.
  Soniyah Reed (4-12 FG, 2-5 3PT) chipped in eleven points in twenty-two minutes of play. Jocelyn Tate (2-4 FG, 3-4 FT) added in seven points and six rebounds off the bench for the Jaguars.

- Seven Jaguars played scored in the contest with three finishing the night with double digits.
- JSU shot 14-of-42 from the field (33.3 percent) and 3-of-11 from 3PT (27.3 percent). 
- Southern pulled down 33 rebounds, including 21 on the defensive side of the glass, led by Gourdine with a team-high seven rebounds
- The Lady Tigers registered 30 rebounds, with 24 coming on the defensive end. 
- The Jaguars also went 12-for-22 from the free-throw line. 
- The Lady Tigers sank 16-of-27 from the charity stripe.
- Southern University finished the night with twelve steals and fourteen assists, led by Gourdine with five assists.
- Jackson State University came away with four steals and five assists.

The Jaguars will be back in action on Saturday afternoon as they face-off with Alcorn State University on Greek Day. The game is slated for a 2:30 PM tip-off and will be streamed live on Jaguar Sports Newtwork.
