Southern Roars Past Grambling State, 67-60

BATON ROUGE | The Southern University men's basketball team (10-8, 5-0 SWAC) edged out Grambling State (4-14, 1-4 SWAC) 67-60 Saturday afternoon at the F.G. Clark Activity Center.

An intense rivalry that had 6,489 fans inside the Mini Dome was amplified towards the end with a wild finish as Southern Michael Jacobs was fouled with 0.8 seconds on the clock as he was shooting a layup that would send him to the line for game-winning free throws. But before he could attempt the free throws a double technical foul was issued to the Tigers head coach and he was ejected from the game.

Cam Amboree stepped up to the charity stripe to shoot the technical foul free throws and knocked down four consecutive free throws, giving the Jaguars a 64-60 lead. Jacobs then stepped up to the charity stripe and made his first free throw, extending the SU advantage 65-60. Before he could attempt his second free throw another technical foul was issued to GSU. Amboree then stepped back up to line and knocked down to more free throws. Jacobs missed his final throw, and the game ended on a GSU rebound.

Forward DaMariee Jones led the Jaguars tying his season-high with 15 points, going a perfect 7-of-7 from the floor. He also added nine rebounds. Cam Amboree contributed 13 points, four assist and two steals. Joe Manning finished with 10 points.

Antwan Burnett led the Tigers with 15 points and 14 rebounds, Kintavious Dozier added 13 points.

Southern had the lead for 33 minutes in the contest, which saw the score tie once late in the second half. The Jaguars largest lead was 12 points after Joe Manning three point make.

With 2:58 remaining in the contest, Dionjahe Thomas made two free throws to extend SU's lead 58-50.

P.J. Eason's free throws pulled the Tigers within a point, 58-57 with 1:16 left on the clock. The next possession DaMariee Jones layup pushed SU's advantage to 60-57 with 1:08 left in the game. Stepping up to the line to convert the old-fashioned three-point play and extend the game to a two-possession advantage he missed the free throw.

Off the missed jumper by the Tigers, Jones came up with a big defensive rebound and passed the ball to Michael Jacobs who was immediately fouled by GSU with 28 second left. Jacobs missed the front end of the one-one free throw but got his own rebound, then SU turned the ball over with 25 seconds.

After a GSU timeout, Mikale Stevenson knocked down a game-tying three pointer with 13 seconds remaining in the game. On the next SU possession, Jacobs drove to the basket and was fouled with 0.8 seconds left in the game. With three technical fouls and an ejection being assessed to the Tigers, the Jaguars were awarded a total of eight shots at the charity stripe in which they made 7-out-8 to end the ballgame.
