Women's Basketball Knocks Off Grambling Saturday Afternoon

BATON ROUGE, LA --The Jaguars use a huge second quarter to take control of the contest to knock off Grambling 59-53 on Saturday afternoon. Final score from the Mini Dome was 59-53.

HOW IT HAPPENED

- The Lady Tigers got off to a fast start outscoring the Jaguars 12-10 in the first ten-minutes of the contest, 12-10.  
- The Jags opened up the ball game by outscoring the Lady Tigers
 22-9 led by Aleighyah Fontenot with 6 second quarter points to give the Jags a an eleven-point at the first half, 32-21.
- The Jaguars and Lady Tigers both scored 17-points each to close the third quarter but the Jags still held on to an eleven-point lead at the end of three, 49-38. 
- Despite outscoring the Jags 15-10 to close the fourth quarter, it wasn't good enough as the Jaguars pick up their third straight. conference win by knocking off Grambling by six-point, 59-53.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS

- Jaguars went 23-of-59 shooting from the field (39.0 percent) and 5-of-12 from 3PT (41.7 percent).
- SU was led by Tionna Lidge (5-9 FG) and Soniyah Reed (4-6 Fg, 2-2 3PT) finished the day with 10 points each. Lidge led tge team with seven rebounds on the day. 
Aleighyah Fontenot (3-8 FG, 2-4 3PT) and Aniya Gourdine (4-13 fg, 0-2 3PT) chipped in eight-points each.
- Eight Jaguars played scored in the contest with two finishing the night with double digits.
- GSU shot 20-of-52 from the field (38.5 percent) and 1-of-8 from 3PT (12.5 percent). 
- Southern pulled down 35 rebounds, including 19 on the defensive side of the glass.
- The Lady Tigers registered 32 rebounds, with 19 coming on the defensive end. 
- The Jaguars also went 8-for-14 from the free-throw line. 
- The Lady Tigers sank 12-of-19 from the charity stripe.
- Southern University finished the night with fourteen steals and twenty assists.
- Grambling State University came away with twelve steals and eighteen assists led by Gourdine with seven assists and six steals.

UP NEXT
The Jaguars will be back in action on Thursday, January 23rd as the travel to Itta Bena, MS to take on Mississippi Valley State University. The game is slated for a 6:00 PM tip-off and will be streamed live on Valley State Sports Newtwork.
