Southern Travels to Jackson State for Saturday Night Showdown

BATON ROUGE, La. | Southern University is set to hit the road to face rival Jackson State at Mississippi Veterans Memorial Stadium in a non-conference game on Saturday, September 14.

The game will kick off at 6:00 p.m. and will be broadcasted on ESPN+.

Southern (1-1) and Jackson State (1-1) are both coming off victories last weekend over SIAC foes Savannah State 42-10 and Lane 58-7. In which both SWAC teams dominated on both sides of the ball. 

The Jaguars are entering the weekend after a 554-yard performance on offense that saw redshirt freshman quarterback Czavian Teasett throw for three touchdowns and 316 passing yards.

On defense, the Jaguars are allowing just 168.5 yards per game including 61 through the air in two games. The defensive has been lead by, Ckelby GivensJamarius Brown, Darrius Harry and Willie Miles who have at least seven or more tackles and combined with 5.5 tackles for loss.

Game Notes

  • Teasett was named the Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) co-Newcomer of the Week after he came into the game midway through the second quarter on Saturday and accounted for three touchdowns in the 42-10 victory over Savannah State in the Pete Richardson Classic. He threw for a career-high 316 yards, while connecting with eight different receivers.
  • Senior Joshua Griffin connected for three field goals during Southern's 42-10 win over Savannah State earning him SWAC Specialist of the week. He was successful on field goal attempts of 38, 44 and 49 yards along with three extra-point attempts during the contest
  • Southern has completed passes to 13 different receivers in two games with Teasett and Bodden under center.
  • The Jaguars have played seven times on this date in school history and have a 5-2 record.
  • Southern travels to Prairie View A&M next weekend to open up Southwestern Athletic Conference play, kickoff is set for 6:00 pm.
