Southern trips up Hornets

BATON ROUGE, La. | Derrick Tezeno led four players in double figures for Southern in a 73-62 win over Alabama State Monday night at the F.G. Clark Activity Center in Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) action.
 
Tezeno led Southern (15-9, 9-2 SWAC) with 19 points, six rebounds while Brandon Davis added 18,Dre'Shawn Allen chipped in 11 points, six rebounds. Tidjiane Dioumassi added 10 and a game-high 12 assists.
 
The Jaguars led by as much as 12 points in the second half with 9:26 remaining on a JaRonn Wilkens made layup. Southern finished the game on a 11-4 run and knocked down 9-10 free throws in the last three minutes to seal the victory. 
 
Alabama State (11-13, 6-5 SWAC) trailed for 17 minutes in the second half and with 2:38 remaining Amarr Knox free throw would cut the deficit to four at 62-58. That would be the closest ASU would get. Knox led the Hornets with 19 points and Micah Octave added 15, while Cj Hines added 10.
 
INSIDE THE NUMBERS 
  • Southern shot 42.6 percent (23-of-54) from the field, 34.8 percent (8-of-23) from the 3-point line and 82.6 percent (19-of-23) from the free-throw line
  • Derrick Tezeno tied his season-high finishing with 19 points, including going 5-of-6 from field goal and 8-of-8 from the foul line. Along with six rebounds, one block and one steal
  • Southern finished with 24 points in the paint, 17 bench points, 11 second-chance points, 10 points off 12 Hornets turnovers and five fast break points
  • Alabama State went 22-of-53 (41.5 percent) from the floor, 7-of-17 (41.2) from the 3-point line and 11-of-14 (78.6 percent) from the charity stripe
  • Amarr Knox finished with a team-high 19 points
  • ASU finished with 33 bench points, 26 points in the paint, eight points off nine SU turnovers, five fast break points and four second-chance points 

UP NEXT

Southern will return to action on Saturday Feb. 17 when they travel to Prairie View. Tip-off against the Panthers is set for 5:30 p.m. central time but will start 30 minutes after the women's game.
