Volleyball Triumphs Over Grambling State in 3-2 Thriller, Sweeps Tigers On The Season

GRAMBLING, La. | Southern University (11-19, 8-6 SWAC) defeated Grambling State (9-16, 6-8 SWAC) in a thrilling 5-set showdown at the Fredrick C. Hobdy Assembly Center. After losing the first two sets in closely contested battles, Southern University made a dramatic comeback to win the final three sets, claiming the victory 3-2.

Set 1: Grambling State 25 – Southern 14
The Tigers were able to establish an early lead with strong attacks. SU struggled to find their rhythm, with GSU cruising to a 25-14 set win.

Set 2: Grambling State 25 – Southern 18
In the second set, the Jaguars attempted to regroup, but Grambling's defense and blocking, kept SU at bay. Despite a six kill performance from Alicia Hearn, they were unable to catch up, as Grambling closed out the set 25-18.

Set 3: Southern 26 – Grambling State 24
The momentum shifted dramatically in the third set. Southern University found their offensive groove, with Hearn, Jordan Felix and Tamara Chavez playing pivotal roles. Hearn finished with 12 kills in the set, showing remarkable efficiency, while Felix contributed with crucial assists. Southern clawed back, with a four point run late in the set to win it 26-24, narrowing the overall match score to 2-1.

Set 4: Southern 27 – Grambling State 25
The fourth set was another back-and-forth affair. GSU appeared poised to close out the match, but Southern's resilience was evident. Hearn continued her dominant performance, while defensive standout Kiarra Rosales and Najah Harris helped with key digs. Southern's four set surge led them to a 27-25 win, tying the match at 2-2.

Set 5: Southern 15 – Grambling State 9
In the decisive fifth set, the Jaguars displayed a gritty performance, limiting the Tigers offense and finishing the set with an impressive 15-9 scoreline. The defense, led by Rosales , Najah Harris and Iyanah Taylor, kept GSU from getting into any rhythm, while Hearn six kills in the final set sealed the victory for Southern.

Alicia Hearn: nine kills, five blocks, two aces and 15.5 points 
Jordan Felix: season high 32 assists
Najah Harris: career and season high 28 digs
Tamara Chavez: nine assists, 10 points

The Jaguars travel to Alabama for a two-game road swing to close out the regular season. First, they take on Alabama A&M for a Sunday afternoon match-up in Huntsville, AL. First serve is at 3:00 pm.
