Dioumassi Powers Southern Past Texas Southern

BATON ROUGE, La. | Tidjiane Dioumassi scored a season-high 15 points to lead Southern to its third consecutive win with a 58-51 victory over Texas Southern in the Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) opener on Saturday night at the F.G. Clark Activity Center.

Southern (7-7, 1-0) only had one Jaguars in double figures, Dioumassi added four assists and three rebounds. Brandon Davis helped out with eight points and four rebounds. Derrick Tezeno and Jariyon Wilkens each added seven points and six rebounds.

HOW IT HAPPENED
Both teams traded baskets for the first five minutes, tell TSU jumped out on a 10-0 run to take an 18-8 lead off a Zytarious Mortle layup with 12:10 remaining in the opening half. 
 
However, Southern responded with an 16-6 run, capped by a Jariyon Wilkens three-point jumper as the Jaguars tied the game 24-24 with just over 2:04 to play. 

SU would find themselves down 26-24 heading into intermission. 
 
Both teams went back-and-forth to open the second half as a SU went on a 4-0 run to extend the lead 32-28. Henry jumper kept TSU close (32-30) with 14:35 remaining. But like the first half, Southern regained momentum and broke open the contest by outscoring TSU 18-7 over the next 9:32 as they claimed a 50-37 lead with four minutes remaining.
 
A 7-0 run aided by free throw shooting allowed TSU to creep back in the contest as the lead was cut to 50-44 after Zytarious Mortle's three-pointer with 1:45 left. Southern would ice the game at the free throw line from that point with six free throws.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS 
  • Southern shot 34.0 percent (18-of-53) from the field, 15.4 percent (2-of-13) from the 3-point line and 66.7 percent (20-of-30) from the free-throw line
  • Tidjiane Dioumassi scored season-high 15 points, including going 7-of-8 from the foul line, along with four assist, three rebounds and one steal
  • Southern finished with 26 points in the paint, 22 bench points, 13 points off 12 Tigers turnovers, nine fast break points and five second-chance points 
  • Texas Southern went 18-of-70 (25.7 percent) from the floor, 5-of-29 (17.2) from the 3-point line and 10-of-17 (58.8 percent) from the charity stripe
  • Jonathan Cisse finished with a team-high 11 points
  • TSU finished with 25 bench points, 20 points in the paint, 10 points off 15 SU turnovers, nine fast break points and five second-chance points
