Southern Defeated by Prairie View in Doubleheader

BATON ROUGE, LA – Southern pushed Prairie View A&M to the limit for 11 innings before the Lady Panther's power took over on Friday afternoon at Lady Jaguar Field. Prairie View came away with a 4-1 win in game one and 9-1 win in game two.
 
Southern dropped to 13-33 overall and 8-15 in SWAC play. Prairie View improved to 25-17 and 21-1 in conference play.
 
GAME 1: Southern 1, Prairie View 4

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Prairie View would threaten in the first with runners on first and third with one out, but Chakirrious Parker would strike out two straight Lady Panther batters to end the inning.
  • The Lady Panthers would score two in the top of the second off of two hits.
  • Southern would get hits by Alana Mark and Keira Miracle-Tilford in the bottom half of the inning but would leave them stranded.
  • Southern would load the bases in the bottom of the third after hits by Alissa Castaneda and Asia George and a walk by Raquel Latta. The next two batters would fly out to the outfield but would not be deep enough to score the runners.
  • Southern would break through in the fifth. George would get a triple down the right field line and McKenzie Ogden would hit a sacrifice fly to center to cut the lead to 2-1.
  • Prairie View would add two more runs in the seventh to make the final score 4-1.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
  • Southern outhit Prairie View 7-6.
  • The Lady Jaguars committed no errors while PVAMU had one.
  • Southern would leave seven runners stranded and Prairie View left six on base.
  • Southern drew one walk and struck out two times.
  • George finished 2-for-4 with a run scored and Mark finished 2-for-3 to lead Southern at the plate.
  • Destinee Smith finished 3-for-3 with two runs scored to lead the Lady Panthers offensively.
GAME 2: Southern 1, Prairie View 9

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Prairie View would score in the top of the first. After the first two batters got out, PVAMU would get a single through the right side of the infield and a homer over left field to give the Lady Panthers a 2-0 lead.
  • In the second, Anabella Valadez would get a hit to center to start the inning after a nine pitch at-bat. Mark would get a single just out the reach of the short stop. Both runners would steal on the next pitch to put runners on second and third with no outs. Londyn Lau would ground out to second, allowing Valadez to score and cut the lead to 2-1.
  • Prairie View would add another run in the top of the third off two hits.
  • The Lady Panthers would add one run in the fourth, four in the fifth, and one in the sixth to give Prairie View a 9-1 win.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
  • Prairie View outhit Southern 13-4.
  • Southern committed two errors and Prairie View committed one.
  • Southern would leave three runners stranded and Prairie View left five on base.
  • Southern drew no walks and struck out one time.
  • Valadez finished 2-for-3 with a run scored to lead Southern at the plate.
  • Biviana Figueroa led Prairie View offensively going 3-for-3 with an RBI and scored twice.

The Lady Jaguars will be back in action on Saturday at noon to finish the series against Prairie View A&M. Londyn Lau, Paytin Mercado and Raquel Latta will be celebrated before the game for their contributions to the softball team.
