Softball Drops Nonconference Game to Jackson State

JACKSON, MS – Southern battled against Jackson State in a nonconference midweek game at JSU Softball Field on Wednesday afternoon but would fall 6-1.
 
Southern dropped to 5-21 overall and are 2-4 in conference play. JSU improved to 14-15 overall and are 3-3 in SWAC play.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Southern would get a runner on in the top of the first but would be unable to get anything else going.
  • Jackson State would strike first in the bottom half of the inning. A leadoff triple followed by a sacrifice fly would give the Tigers a 1-0 lead. The next batter would get a single and Isabel Gusman would hit a two-run home run to extend the lead to 3-0.
  • Both teams would go down in order in the second and third innings.
  • Southern would get a runner on third in the fourth but were unable to bring them home. JSU would add three more in the bottom half.
  • Blair Willis would get her first collegiate hit in the top of the fifth. She would advance to third on a single by Londyn Lau and would come around to score when Lau stole second.
  • Willis would get another hit in the seventh but the Lady Jaguars would not be able to push any more runs across.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
  • Jackson State would outhit Southern, 7-5.
  • Both teams would commit one error.
  • Southern would leave four runners stranded, while JSU left two.
  • Southern drew no walks and struck out four times.
  • Willis led the Lady Jaguars at the plate going 2-for-3 with a run scored.
  • JSU was led by Mari Stephens who went 2-for-3 with an RBI and a run scored. Gusman went 1-for-3 with a two-run home run.
 
UP NEXTs
Southern will return to conference play when they take on University of Arkansas – Pine Bluff on March 25-26. Sunday's double header is scheduled to begin at 1 p.m. and Monday's contest will start at 11 a.m. The games were originally scheduled for Friday and Saturday but were pushed back due to incoming weather.
