Southern Falls Short 77-63 in Quarterfinals of 2023 SWAC Tournament

BIRMINGHAM, AL --The #4 seed Southern (15-17, 11-7) men's basketball team fell in the opening round of the 2023 Cricket Wireless SWAC Basketball Tournament to #5 seed Alabama A&M (15-17, 10-8) 77-63 at Bartow Arena Thursday Night.

Brion Whitley led the Jaguars with 18 points. Bryson Etienne tacked on 11 points and two steals. Off of the bench DeSean Woods and Dre'Shawn Allen chipped in nine points..
Southern forced 17 Bulldogs turnovers. The Jaguars turned those takeaways into 14 points on the offensive end of the floor. 

How It Happened
Southern struggled out of the gate, falling behind 11-3 by the 12:13 mark in the first half.

The Jaguars continued to lose ground late in the first half as they were down by 15 points 3 times and faced a 36-23 halftime deficit.

Southern opened up the second half on a 6-2 run to trim its deficit to 38-29 with 18:42 to go in the half. The Bulldogs continued to extend their lead as they got up by 20 points, 54-34 by the 12:35 mark in the half. 

The Jaguars bench made the most of its minutes as they narrowed its deficit to 57-49 with 5:49 to go in the contest. Alabama A&M responded and outscored the Jaguars the rest of the way, ending the game with a final score of 77-63. 

INSIDE THE NUMBERS 
  • Southern shot 37.7 percent (20-of-53) from the field, 21.1 percent (4-of-19) from the 3-point line and 73.1 percent (19-of-26) from the free-throw line
  • Southern finished with 25 bench points, 22 points in the paint, 14 points off 17 Bulldogs Turnovers, eight fast break points and four second-chance points
  • AAMU went 22-of-47 (46.8 percent) from the floor, 7-of-19 (36.8) from the 3-point line and 26-of-35 (74.3 percent) from the charity stripe
  • Messiah Thompson and Garrett Hicks scored in double figures for the Bulldogs. Thompson finished with a team-high 27 points
  • Alabama A&M finished with 24 bench points, 22 points in the paint, 15 points off 13 SU turnovers, 17 second-chance points and eight fast break points
