MONTGOMERY, Ala. – The Southern University Lady Jaguars (1-11) came up short in both games on Saturday at the HBCU Classic hosted by Alabama State at the Barbara Williams Complex. The Lady Jaguars would fall 2-0 to Florida A&M and 8-0 to Alabama State.
Game 1 – Southern 0, Florida A&M 2

L: Anabella Valadez (0-4)
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Neither team could get any production through the first three innings. Southern was sent down in order, while FAMU had two hits.
- FAMU scored first in the fourth inning to take the lead 1-0. Nyah Morgan doubled and moved to third on a sacrifice bunt. She would come around to score on a single by Natasha Fox. Another single by the Rattlers would put runners on the corner, but after a steal from second the Lady Jaguars would get the runner from third out attempting to take home and a popup to shortstop would end the top half of the inning.
- Southern would threaten in the fifth, an error would allow Alana Mark to be the first Lady Jaguar to reach base. Christina Mayer would pinch run for Mark and would reach third on a double by Julia York. The next three SU batters were not able to push any of the runners across.
- FAMU would add an insurance run in the seventh on a home run.
- Southern would threaten in the bottom half, getting Mark and York on second and third with two outs, but a ground ball to third would end the game.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
- FAMU would have the advantage in hits at 6-1.
- Southern would be perfect in the field, while FAMU finished with one error.
- Each team would leave four runners stranded.
- Southern drew one walk and struck out three times.
- York would have the lone hit for the Lady Jaguars and finished 1-for-3 with a double.
- Jane Mobley led FAMU at the plate, going 2-for-3. Destiny Cuevas would go 1-fo-3 with a home run and Morgan finished 1-for-2 with a double and a run scored.
Game 2 – Southern 0, Alabama State 8

HOW IT HAPPENED
- Alabama State would score in the first inning after loading the bases and scoring on a sacrifice fly.
- ASU would score another in the second after a triple and another sac fly.
- ASU would end up scoring three more in the third and three in the fifth to end the game with a run-rule victory.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
- ASU would outhit Southern 8-1.
- Southern would finish with three errors, compared to none by ASU.
- Southern would leave no runners on base, while ASU would leave six.
- Southern drew no walks and struck out two times.
- Mark would get the only Lady Jaguars hit in the fifth inning.
- Elizabeth Williams led ASU at the plate, going 2-for-2 with three RBIs.
