MONTGOMERY, AL – The Southern University Lady Jaguars (1-13) lost both games in walk-off fashion on the final day of the HBCU Classic at the Barbara Williams Complex on the campus of Alabama State University.
Alabama A&M hit a walk-off home run in the bottom of the ninth to defeat the Lady Jaguars 10-8 in the first game and Alabama State would hit a walk-off double in the seventh for the 9-8 win.
Southern would combine for 24 hits on the final day.
Game 1 – Southern 8, Alabama A&M 10

HOW IT HAPPENED
- Alabama A&M got on the board first in the second inning. Starting off the inning with back-to-back singles and a sacrifice bunt, the Bulldogs got a run on another single up the middle and a double steal to make it 2-0 after the second inning.
- Southern would respond by getting four runs in the third. Asia George would swing the momentum after striking out but reaching first on a wild pitch. She would then steal second. The Lady Jaguars would get a single, sacrifice fly, and three straight singles to gain the lead at 4-2.
- After giving up an unearned run in the bottom of the third, Southern would extend their lead to 6-3. After loading the bases, Alissa Castaneda and Alana Mark would single in back-to-back at bats to score the two runs.
- The Bulldogs would get four runs in the fifth, three unearned, and take the lead at 7-6. Mark would tie it up the next half inning by sending a single up the middle allowing McKenzie Ogden to score from second.
- The score would stay knotted at seven all through the seventh, sending the game into extra innings. In extras, each team would place a runner on second to start the inning and each team would score one in the eighth.
- In the ninth, Southern would get runners on second and third with just one out, but were unable to produce a run. Alabama A&M would sacrifice their runner over to third and the next batter would pop out to second. With two outs, Venice Sanders would hit a home run to give the Bulldogs the 10-8 win.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
- Southern would have a 15-11 advantage in hits.
- The Lady Jaguars would commit five errors in the game, while the Bulldogs would commit none.
- Nine Southern runners were stranded, compared to six by Alabama A&M.
- Southern drew no walks and struck out six times.
- Castaneda went 3-for-5 with two RBIs and Mark finished 3-for-5 with three RBIs to lead Southern at the plate. Londyn Lau and Ogden would both have two hits.
- Alabama A&M was lead by Sanders going 2-for-5 with three runs scored and the two winning RBIs. Three other Bulldog batters would finish with two hits.
Game 2 – Southern 8, Alabama State 9

HOW IT HAPPENED
- Southern would take advantage of an Alabama State error in the second inning to take a 6-0 lead. With runners on second and third with one out, Sydney Wesley would single to left field, allowing the first run to score. The error came on the next play when Keira Miracle-Tilford laid down a sacrifice bunt to score the second run, but she would be safe at first from an errant throw by the third baseman. Southern would score four more after that error.
- Alabama State would score one in the second and third to cut the lead to 6-2.
- In the fourth, ASU would score five more to take the lead, finishing the inning with four hits.
- Southern would get the first two batters on base to start the sixth. After a sacrifice bunt by Miracle-Tilford to move the runners, Kameryn Adkins would ground out to third but put it in the right spot to score the runner from third. Two straight singles would give the Lady Jaguars the lead at 8-7.
- ASU would tie it up after an error and passed ball in the sixth.
- Alabama State would give Southern their second walk-off loss of the day in the bottom of the seventh.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
- Alabama would have a slight advantage in hits at 10-9.
- Southern would finish with three errors, compared to one by ASU.
- Southern stranded five runners, while Alabama State left six on base.
- Southern drew two walks and struck out five times.
- George, Ogden, Anabella Valadez and Wesley went 2-for-4. George and Ogden finished with two RBIs. Wesley scored twice.
- Jaeda Gardner led ASU at the plate, going 3-for4 with two RBIs and scoring once.
UP NEXT
Southern will host their second tournament on the season from March 3-4. Defend the Bluff will pit the Lady Jaguars against Alabama A&M on Friday at 5:30 and Saturday at 2:30. They will then take on Louisiana Christian University at 5:00 pm.
