Southern Gets Back In The Win Column, Defeats PVAMU

BATON ROUGE, La – The Southern University men's basketball team got back in the win column as they earned a tough SWAC conference victory 79-65 over Prairie View (9-16, 5-7) Saturday night at the F.G. Clark Activity Center, to stay at the top in the SWAC standings.
 
The Panthers jumped out to a 17-9 lead with two 3-pointers from Will Douglas with 14:23 left to play in the half. Southern fought back with a 10-0 run that gave the Jaguars their only lead of the half off Tyrone Lyons 3-pointer with 9:36 to go. Prairie View shot well in the first half connecting for 8-15 from the 3-point line (53.3%) and 14-28 from field goal range (50.0%) while SU shot 3-11 from behind the arc (27.3%) and 10-29 field goal (34.5%). 
 
SU went into the locker room trailing 31-38 at the break. 
 
Southern (13-12, 9-3) was led by Brion Whitley with 18 points and four assist, Festus Ndumanya added 15 points and seven rebounds, P.J. Byrd finished with 14 points. 
 
The Jaguars came out in the second half on a slow start and found themselves trailing 31-41. Southern was able to go on a 11-0 run capped off by Brion Whitley 3-pointer with 17:31 remaining. There were three lead changes before Festus Ndumanya old fashioned three-point play gave Southern a 47-45 lead with 14:46 left in the game. 
 
Southern wouldn't trail again as they outscored Prairie View by 21 points in the second half to seal the victory.
 
INSIDE THE NUMBERS 
  • Southern shot 41.5 percent (22-of-53) from the field, 45.0 percent (9-of-20) from the 3-point line and 81.3 percent (26-of-32) from the free-throw line
  • Southern finished with 29 bench points, 23 points off 15 Panthers Turnovers, 19 fast break points, 14 points in the paint and 10 second-chance points
  • Jaguars outrebounded PVAMU 36-31
  • PVAMU went 23-of-54 (42.6 percent) from the floor, 12-of-31 (38.7) from the 3-point line and 7-of-13 (53.8 percent) from the charity stripe
  • Will Douglas, Yahuza Rasas and Jeremiah Gambrell all scored in double figures for the Panthers. Douglas finished with a team-high 13 points
  • PVAMU finished with 20 bench points, 18 points in the paint, eight points off 10 SU turnovers, six fast break points and five second-chance points 
 
UP NEXT 
Southern will host Texas Southern on Monday Feb. 13. Tip-off against the Tigers is set for 8:03 p.m. central time and the game will be televised on HBCUGO Sports.
