Southern Basketball Cruises by Southeastern Louisiana 69-44

BATON ROUGE, La. | Four players scored in double figures as the Southern University men’s basketball team cruised by Southeastern Louisiana 69-44, to pick up its second consecutive win on Saturday afternoon at the F.G. Clark Activity Center. 

Southern (3-6) was led by Brandon Davis who scored 14 points, dished out a season-high seven assists, four rebounds, two blocks and two steals. Tidjiane Dioumassi scored all 12 of his points in the second half, including going 3-of-3 from the foul line, along with four boards, four assist and two steals. Delang Muon added 12 points, a season and team-high seven rebounds and three blocks, while Derrick Tezeno tallied 11 points, four boards  and one steal. 

HOW IT HAPPENED
Both teams started strong from the floor as Southeastern Louisiana (2-7)  jumped out to a 10-9 lead after a Bittar made free throw with 11:53 remaining in the opening half.
 
However, Southern responded with an 13-0 run, capped by a Davis jumper as the Jaguars took an 22-10 lead with just over 7 minutes to play. 
 
The Jaguars defense stepped up as they held SLU scoreless for six minutes and extended their largest lead of the first half to 19 points from a 3-pointer by Davis
 
Southern was able to extend their run to 22-2 and take a 31-12 lead with 1:54 minutes to halftime. The Jaguars took a 36-16 lead into the halftime locker room.
 
Southeastern came out strong to start the second half as they went on a 14-7 run to cut the deficit down to 13 points at 43-30 with 13:20 left in the game. 
 
Changing defenses kept SLU off balance as they Jaguars defense was stifling the Lions. Dioumassi jumper sparked another 14-2 SU run as the Jags opened up a 25-point advantage at 59-34 with 5:45 left in the contest,
 
SLU would cut it 20 points off a Cadlwell jumper with less than five minutes left, but Southeastern got no closer the rest of the way.
 
Southern finished the game on a 10-5 run capped by JaRonn Wilkens layup with nine seconds left.
 
INSIDE THE NUMBERS 

  • Southern shot 46.6 percent (27-of-58) from the field, 19 percent (4-of-21) from the 3-point line and 78.6 percent (11-of-14) from the free-throw line
  • Brandon Davis who scored 14 points, dished out a season-high seven assists, four rebounds, two blocks and two steals 
  • Tidjiane Dioumassi scored all 12 of his points in the second half, including going 3-of-3 from the foul line, along with four boards, four assist and two steals
  • Delang Muon added 12 points, a season and team-high seven rebounds and three blocks 
  • Derrick Tezeno tallied 11 points, four boards and one steal
  • Southern finished with 30 points in the paint, 27 bench points, 22 points off 22 Lions turnovers, 10 second-chance points and four fast break points 
  • Southeastern Louisiana went 14-of-46 (30.4 percent) from the floor, 3-of-18 (16.7) from the 3-point line and 13-of-23 (56.5 percent) from the charity stripe
  • Nick Caldwell finished with a team-high 14 points
  • SLU finished with 20 points in the paint, seven bench points, five points off nine SU turnovers, five second-chance points and two fast break points
  • This was the 28th meeting on the hardwood between Southeastern Louisiana and Southern since 1998. The series is tied 14-14
     

UP NEXT

Southern will return to action Tuesday Dec. 12 for Field Trip Day when they host Champion Christian College. Tip-off against the Tigers is set for 11:00 a.m. central time and the game will be streamed on https://jaguarsportsnetwork.com
