Lyons Game Winning Three Pointer, Propels Jaguars To Overtime Win Over TSU

HOUSTON, Tx - Tyrone Lyons hit two three-pointers in the final 11.4 seconds, including the game-winner with .05 seconds left as Southern won 77-76 in a thriller overtime battle over Texas Southern in both team's SWAC opener on Monday night at the H&PE Arena.

Southern (5-9, 1-0) jumped out to an 8-2 lead in the first three minutes behind former TSU player Bryson Etienne two 3-pointers and jumper, John Walker III kept Texas Southern (4-9, 0-1) close with six points as the gap closed to 8-6 with 14:56 left.

Southern scored the next six straight points to extend the lead 14-6 after Festus Ndumanya layup but both teams began to cool off over the next few minutes as TSU closed the gap 17-12. SU would maintain the lead over the next five minutes, but the Tigers went on a 6-0 run aided by Zytarious Mortle layup cutting the lead 26-24 at the 2:44 mark. However, the Jaguars answered with a 12-3 run to close out the first half capped off by P.J. Byrd made free throws taking a 38-27 lead into the break.

The second half both teams came out trading baskets matching each other's production until Festus Ndumanya scored in the paint while being fouled.  After making his free throw and finishing an old fashion three-point play. SU took its largest lead of the night by 15 points (47-32) with 16:56 left in the half. The Tigers would respond behind Mortle's seven straight points which sparked a 10-0 TSU run, cutting the Jaguars lead 53-48 with 9:46 left. However, Bryson Etienne answered with a three pointer after the run as SU scored five straight to stay ahead 58-48 with 8:37 left.

TSU refused to go away as they outscored the Jaguars 9-2 over the next 3:50 to get within 60-57 with 4:14 left. After some good shot opportunities that didn't fall for SU, the Tigers finished on a 4-0 run behind Mortle jumper which tied the ball game at 63-63 with :50 seconds left. SU had a chance to claim the lead late as Etienne jumper fell short which allowed TSU to take a timeout after the rebound. With :21 seconds left a strong SU defense effort forced TSU into a tough contested shot with SU getting the rebound as time expired in regulation forcing overtime.

Southern would strike first in OT after Byrd two made free throws. The Tigers used a three-point play to extend the TSU lead 66-69 with 2:19 left. Looking for a much-needed basket the Jaguars turned to veteran Bryson Etienne as he made a tough contested 3-pointer from the right wing. TSU came back and answered with a tough 3-pointer of their own from Mortle to extend the Tigers lead 69-73 and making it a two-possession game. On the very next series, Southern got the ball inside to Jalen Reynolds who would draw the foul and made two free throws cutting the TSU advantage 71-73. SU fouled quickly. Putting Gilliam on the charity stripe with :21.4 seconds left. Gilliam converted both free throws pushing the lead 71-75 with 11.4 seconds left. SU pushed the ball down the court quickly as Tyrone Lyons hit a deep 3-pointer to trail 74-75.

After two great inbound defensive efforts from the Jaguars where they tipped the inbounds pass twice almost getting the steal, SU fouled Gilliam with 6.2 seconds left. He converted the first free throw pushing the TSU advantage 74-76. The second free throw rolled around the rim and fell off the left side where Tyrone Lyons rebounded the ball and then pushed it up the right side of the court with 1.2 seconds left Lyons pulled up from 25 feet away and drained the game winning three pointer with .5 seconds left. TSU was unable to get a shot off as the Jaguars won 77-76.
