Volleyball Falters on Opening Day of Colonel Classic

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 THIBODAUX, LAThe Southern University Lady Jaguars (0-5) lost to Nicholls (3-1) and Southern Illinois (2-3) on the first day of the Colonel Classic.
 
Match 1 – SU 0, Nicholls 3
(21-25, 20-25, 19-25)

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • First game was a back-and-forth affair. Southern cut the deficit to 21-23 before losing the next two points. Nicholls took the first game 21-25.
  • Southern took the early lead in game two at 5-3. The Colonels then took the next four points. The game continued to go back and forth until Nicholls won the set 20-25.
  • The Lady Jaguars took another early lead at 3-1 before Nicholls won the next seven of nine points. Southern was able to tie it up at 15-15. Nicholls finished the match with a 19-25 win.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
  • Nicholls held a 36-23 advantage in kills.
  • Southern had four aces compared to six by Nicholls
  • Southern had seven blocks while the Colonels only have four
  • Nicholls had 32 assists to the Lady Jaguars 22
  • Digs were almost equal with Nicholls taking a slight advantage at 44-45
  • Xaria Taylor led Southern with eight kills and five blocks
  • Jordan Felix (11) and Kyla Carrier (9) led the team in assists
  • Carrier and Trenity Lundy both had double digit digs at 10 and 17

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • SIU Jumped out to an early lead, but the Lady Jaguars were able to keep it close at 10-15. SIU then pulled away for a 14-25 win.
  • Game two say the Lady Jaguars hold the lead at 10-9. SIU was then able to take the next five points on the way to a 13-25 victory.
  • The Salukis took the match in game three with a 10-25 win.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
  • SIU held a 39-20 advantage in kills.
  • Southern had one ace compared to seven by Southern Illinois
  • Southern had five blocks while the Salukis only had two
  • SIU had 34 assists to the Lady Jaguars 18
  • Digs were almost equal with SIU taking a slight advantage at 24-23
  • Akilah Smith, Kailee Deffebaugh and Taylor had four kills each
  • Carrier led the team with 11 assists
  • Trinity Brown had a team high six digs

Southern will finish out the Colonel Classic Saturday against UC San Diego at 10 a.m.
