BATON ROUGE, LA. -- The Southern University women's soccer team defeated Nicholls State by a score of 2-1 on Friday evening in Thibodaux, Louisiana to open regular season play.
"What a way to start the season!! To watch my team battle from the blow of the first whistle to the last and come out on top…That's a great feeling. I am proud! ", said Head Coach Jeremy Fontenot.
The Colonels scored the first point of the game early in the twelfth minute of the opening period, but the Lady Jaguars were able to respond in the fourteenth minute with a goal off the leg of
Helaun Mulligan.
The second half proved to be a defensive battle where both teams were scoreless until a shot into their own goal by the Colonels gave the Lady Jaguars a 2-1 lead with a little under 25 minutes to go in the game.
Goalkeeper
Sydney Bellamy and the SU defense made five big saves in the second half to ensure the victory for the Lady Jaguars.

The Lady Jaguars will be back in action on Sunday, August 21
st, when they travel to play North Dakota State University at 11:00 am in Thibodaux, Louisiana.
