Southern Dominates Champion Christian 112-52 In Home Opener

BATON ROUGE, La. | J'Quan Ewing scored a season-high 16 points and grabbed six rebounds to lead six Southern players in double-figure scoring, as the Jaguars cruised by Champion Christian 112-52 on Monday night in the 2022-23 season home opener. 
 
Southern (3-4) jumped out to a 16-2 lead off a Tyrone Lyons jumper and took a 53-25 halftime lead into the locker room. The Jaguars turned over the Tigers 21 times in the first half while holding them to 32 percent from the field. Southern shoot 52.5 percent from the field while scoring 30 points off turnovers.
 
The Jaguars came out in the second half just like they finished the first, with tough defense and out pacing the Tigers. In the final 20 minutes, Southern dished out 13 assist while turning it over only three times. Shooting 61.9 percent from the floor and 36.4 from behind the arc.
 
Champion Christian scored five straight points in the second half to cut a 83-41 deficit, but from that point, the Jaguars sparked a 16-8 run over a 5-minute span.
  
JaRonn Wilkens put the Jaguars in triple digits with a 3-pointer with 4:45 left to play to make it 102-49. KKris Gardner back-to-back treys gave Southern a 108-49 lead.
 
INSIDE THE NUMBERS 
  • Southern shot 57.3 percent (47-of-82) from the field, 26.3 percent (5-of-19) from the 3-point line and 56.5 percent (13-of-23) from the free-throw line
  • J'Quan Ewing led the way offensively with a season-high 16 points, on 8-of-12 from the floor and six rebounds
  • JaRonn Wilkens finished with a season-high 12 points 
  • Tyrone Lyons added 11 points
  • Jariyon Wilkens had a season-high 11 points and season/game-high eight rebounds
  • Bryson Etienne and Dre'Shawn Allen each chipped in 10 points
  • Southern finished with 78 points in the paint, 77 bench points, 46 points off 31 Tigers turnovers, 28 fast break points and 17 second-chance points 
  • Champion Christian went 18-of-58 (31.0 percent) from the floor, 9-of-38 (23.7) from the 3-point line and 7-of-10 (70.0 percent) from the charity stripe
  • Tigers finished with 14 points in the paint, 12 bench points, five points off 10 SU turnovers, four second-chance points and two fast break point

Southern travels to Ruston, LA for a matchup with Louisiana Tech on Friday Dec. 1 at Thomas Assembly Center. Tip-off against the Bulldogs is set for 6:00 p.m. central time and the game will be streamed on ESPN+.
