Lady Jaguars Battle Against FAMU and AAMU

BATON ROUGE, LA – Southern University opened the Southwestern Athletic Conference cluster against Florida A&M in Seymour Gymnasium on Sunday at 9 a.m. They continued to battle in the final match of the day against Alabama A&M. The Lady Jaguars would come up short in both matches, 3-0.

HOW IT HAPPENED
SET 1
  • The Rattlers would jump out to a 4-1 lead, but the Lady Jaguars would fight their way back to within one at 8-7.
  • Southern would continue to keep things close throughout the match. A three-point run would tie things up at 12 apiece.
  • The Lady Jaguars would get their first lead of the match at 19-18 and force FAMU to use a timeout.
  • After FAMU cut the lead down to one at 22-21, the Lady Jaguars would use their first timeout.
  • Southern would use their final timeout still up 24-23, but FAMU would get the next three points to win set one, 26-24.
SET 2
  • Southern would get the first two points of the second set, but FAMU would come back with the next six to go up 6-2.
  • After a Southern would call their first timeout, but that would not slow down the Rattlers. FAMU would grow their lead to double digits at 17-7.
  • Southern would try to claw their way back but the lead would be too much. FAMU would take the second set 25-14.
SET 3
  • A four-point run early in the third set would give FAMU a 7-3 lead and Southern would call their first timeout after a two more points for FAMU, 9-4.
  • A couple more runs by the Rattlers grew their lead to 20-12 and forced Southern to call their final timeout of the set.
  • FAMU would go on to take the match in the third set 25-15.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
  • FAMU would have a 40-25 advantage in kills.
  • SU would finish with eight blocks to seven by Florida A&M
  • The Lady Jaguars had 23 assists while the Rattlers had 39.
  • Southern came away with 36 digs to 51 from FAMU.
  • Jordan Felix had seven kills to lead the Lady Jaguars, while Akilah Smith had six.
  • Xaria Taylor would have four blocks for Southern.

SET 1
  • Southern would keep things close early in the first set, only trailing 3-2, but an 8-2 run by the Bulldogs would force them to use their first timeout.
  • Alabama A&M would continue to attack Southern, out scoring them 9-5 to see their lead grow to 20-9, forcing the Lady Jaguars to use their last timeout.
  • Southern would find their footing and keep pace with Alabama A&M but would fall, 25-15.
SET 2
  • Southern would carry their momentum into the second set, jumping out to a 5-1 lead.
  • The Bulldogs would fight their way back to 10 apiece, forcing Southern to use their first timeout.
  • With the score deadlocked at 15, Alabama A&M would use a five-point run to force Southern to use their last timeout down 20-15.
  • Alabama A&M would add two more to their run before Southern would score another point. The Bulldogs would add two more to get to set point at 24-16.
  • Southern would not go down easy, scoring four-straight points had Alabama A&M to use a timeout at 24-20. AAMU would close it out and take set two, 25-20.
SET 3
  • The teams would start the third set in a battle. Neither team would be able to get more than two points in row before Alabama A&M use one to force Southern to call a timeout down 14-11.
  • Southern would fight back to tie it at 15-15, but a four-point run buy Alabama A&M had Southern call their final timeout trailing 19-15.
  • Alabama A&M would close out the match with a third set victory, 25-19.

  • AAMU would have a 41-28 advantage in kills.
  • SU would finish with six blocks to just one by Alabama A&M.
  • The Lady Jaguars had 25 assists, while the Bulldogs had 40.
  • Southern came away with 30 digs to 44 from AAMU.
  • Xaria Taylor (9) and Felix (7) led the Lady Jaguars in kills.
  • Felix finished with 11 assists, while Xaria Taylor finished with seven for Southern.
  • Xaria Taylor (4), Felix (3) and Kailee Deffebaugh (2) had multiple blocks.

The Lady Jaguars will finish out the cluster against Mississippi Valley on Monday afternoon inside Seymour Gymnasium. The match is scheduled to be the final game with a 1 p.m. start time.
