Volleyball Falls to Grambling in Straight Sets

GRAMBLING, LA – Grambling State University was too much for the Southern University volleyball team Monday night inside Fredrick Hobdy Arena in Grambling, Louisiana, taking the match 3-0.

HOW IT HAPPENED
SET 1
  • Grambling would jump out to a 5-1 lead to start the match, but the Lady Jaguars would get the next three points to cut the lead to one.
  • GSU would go on a three-point run to grow their lead back to 9-5 before Southern would go on a four-point run themselves to tie it at 9 apiece.
  • Another run by Grambling, this time a 7-1 run, would give them a six-point lead at 16-10.
  • Southern would get the next four points to pull within two, but Grambling would finish the set on a 9-0 run to take it 25-14.
SET 2
  • Set two would start out in the Lady Jaguars favor, taking a quick 7-1 lead. Grambling would respond with a 6-1 run of their own to cut the lead to one at 8-7.
  • Southern would grow their lead to four on two separate occasions at 14-10 and 15-11.
  • Grambling would get the next two points to cut the lead in half before Southern would get their largest lead at six, 19-13.
  • Southern would use both timeouts to try to stop a run by Grambling, but that would not be enough as GSU would finish the set on a 12-3 run to take the set 25-22.
SET 3
  • Grambling would jump out to a quick lead, securing seven of the first 10 points to lead 7-3.
  • The Lady Jaguars would try to fight their way back in, but a six-point run would grow the lead to double digits.
  • Neither team would get more than two points in a row the remainder of the set, giving Grambling a 25-13 win to take the match.
 
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
  • Grambling held a 48-15 advantage in kills
  • SU would finish with nine blocks to eight by GSU
  • Southern finished with 13 assists, while Grambling had 45.
  • The Lady Jaguars had 37 digs, compared to 52 by Grambling.
  • Xaria Taylor had seven blocks to lead the Lady Jaguars, followed by Jordan Felix with six.
  • Felix and Trenity Lundy had eight digs apiece.
