TROY, ALABAMA -- Southern falls short in their season opener on the road to Troy 55-3 in front of 22,399 fans at Veteran Memorial Stadium on the campus of Troy University.
Junior kicker Martell Fontenot gave the Jaguars the only score of the night off a 31-yard field goal in the second quarter. The lone score capped of a 12-play 64-yard drive for SU.
Ladarius Skelton finished the night with 85 yards passing and 31 yards rushing. Devon Benn added 50 yards on the ground for the Jaguars averaging 4.5 yards a carry. Freshman Tyler Kirkwood led the Jags in receiving with 39 yards off four grabs.
Ray Anderson led the Jaguars on the defensive side of the ball with eight tackles, Keyshawn Acker and Jakobi Jones finished the night with six tackles each. Glenn Brown, Tyler Judson and Chase Foster added five tackle each for the Jags.
Taylor Powell finished the night with 234 yards and two passing touchdowns. Powell added a rushing touchdown for the Trojans. Tez Johnson ended the night with 92-yards receiving off five catches, one being a score.
UP NEXT
Southern will be back in action with a two-game home stand starting on Sept. 11th against Miles College in the Pete Richardson Classic and on Sept. 18th against McNeese State at A. W. Mumford Stadium. Both game is slated for a 6:00 PM kickoff.
