PRAIRIE VIEW, TX. -- Southern used a goal in the 72nd minute Thursday to defeat #3 Prairie View A&M, 1-0 in the opening round of the SWAC Tournament.
"This was a really hard fought win on the road to open SWAC Tournament Play," Southern head coach
Jeremy Fontenot said. "I am very pleased with our effort and ability to be able to compete for 90 minutes. We got to keep competing and stay together as a team, now we need to rest up for and get ready for GSU/UAPB on Friday."
Brynn Hill passed the ball to
Cordney Armstrong and she pushed it past the keeper for the only goal of the contest to give Southern (3-4, 2-2 SWAC) the win. The goal was the second for Armstrong this season.
The Lady Jaguars were able to get seven shots off against Prairie View A&M, with three of those coming from Armstrong and two from
Faith Sparks. Meanwhile,
Chioma Eriken recorded her first shutout of the season with six saves.

Southern returns to action on Friday in the SWAC Tournament Semifinals facing the #2 Grambling State / #7 University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff winner at 5:30pm at Prairie View.
